Leeds United v Manchester United Premier League Sunday 25th April 2021

EverythingSports

This was the first game Manchester United had played since the European Super League got stopped in its tracks (for now), and it was a big one as it was against their rivals Leeds United.

It was 9th placed Leeds United playing in white against Manchester United playing in red.

The reverse game was a fabulous game which ended 6-2 to Man United, so would we get a similar result here, or would it be a cagey affair, now Leeds have evolved since that day?

Keep reading to find out.

It was played at Elland Road.

After one minute, Fernandes crossed a freekick in, but Greenwood’s header was easily saved by Meslier.

After 10 minutes, Fernandes freekick crossed in again and Maguire’s half hearted attempt went over.

9 minutes later, Harrison crossed into the area, towards Bamford and it came off Shaw’s arms, there were appeals for a penalty and VAR did check it, but no penalty awarded.

On the half hour mark, another Man United freekick in a dangerous area, but Fernandes’ right footed effort went over.

Two minutes later, good buildup by Leeds ended with a corner which came to nothing. Then a couple of minutes later, Fernandes lost the ball to Phillips who passed to Dallas but his straight left footed shot from  outside the area was straight at Henderson.

A couple of minutes later, Ayling slipped while trying to tackle Rashford but Rashford went down, freekick awarded to Man United, but it was cleared for a  corner which came to nothing.

Six minutes before the break, Shaw’s freekick was whipped in but McTominay could only get a glance on it.

The last action of the first half was in stoppage time, as Rashford’s freekick from outside the area was tipped over by Meslier for a corner, from which Maguire had a free header but it went over.

Halftime score:  Leeds United 0-0 Manchester United

So it was a cagey first half in which neither side played their best, Man United just edged it.  What would the 2nd half bring more of the same or more excitement?

After 51 minutes,  Fernandes had a left footed shot for Man United from left side for the box but it was blocked.

Three minutes later, a dangerous cross was played into the Man United area by Costa but no-one could get on the end of it.

A couple of minutes later, good buildup by Man United which ended with Fernandes’ right footed shot from from the centre of the box just going wide of the post.

Just after the hour mark, at one end, there was a long ball played by Fernandes to Rashford who squared to James who couldn’t sort his feet out, then at the other end, Leeds broke and Costa’s left footed shot was deflected for a corner which came to nothing.

With just over fifteen minutes to play, Leeds did a counter attack which ended with a weak shot from Klich, also Ayling had a right footed shot from outside the box saved by Henderson. A minute later, good play by Man United and Shaw crossed to Fernandes who shot wide.

The last real action was after 83 minutes as Greenwood’s left footed shot was saved.

Fulltime score:  Leeds United 0-0 Manchester United

So not the best game between two rivals, not enough excitement in this one.

It means Man United stay 2nd on 67 points which is 10 points behind Man City, Leeds stay in 9th on 47 points. It also means that if Man City win on Saturday against Crystal Palace and Man United lose to Liverpool on Sunday then Man City will be confirmed as champions, it also means Man United only need four points from their remaining five games to secure Champions League football next season.

Next up for Leeds is a trip to Brighton on Saturday 2nd May 3pm kickoff, and next for Man United is the first leg of their Europa League semi-final against Roma at Old Trafford 8pm kickoff, that’s an important game.
