This was the 34th game of a pretty good first season back in the Premier League for Leeds United.

They were coming into this one on the back of three games in which they got a win and 2 draws against 3 of the “Big Six”.

It was 16th placed Brighton and Hove Albion playing in blue v  9th placed Leeds United playing in maroon.

Could Brighton be the 3rd team this season to do the double over Leeds and edge closer to safety, or could Leeds avoid that?

It was played at the Amex Stadium.

After 7 minutes,  Brighton had three efforts in a row

Trossard’s  left footed shot from the centre of the box was saved.  Then Bissouma’s right footed shot from outside the box was blocked, and then Maupay’s right footed shot from the centre of the box missed to the right.

After 10 minutes, Gross’ right footed shot from outside the box was blocked.

Brighton penalty and first goal

Three minutes later, there was a clumsy challenge by Alioski on Welbeck, the penalty was awarded. Gross’ penalty was a right footed shot into the bottom left corner, Meslier went the right way but just couldn’t keep it out.

After 20 minutes, Leeds’ first real effort on goal which was a right footed shot from Llorente from more than 35 yards but it went too high.

A couple of minutes later, Struijk’s header from close range was saved, then Harrison’s left footed shot from the right side of the box was saved in the top centre of the goal.

Just before the half hour mark, Harrison’s left footed shot from outside the box was close, but missed to the top right corner.

After 34 minutes, Roberts’ right footed shot from centre of the box was blocked.

With five minutes of the first half remaining,  Trossard’s right footed shot from the centre of the box was just too high.

Then after 42 minutes, Welbeck’s left footed shot from the left side of the box missed to the right.

The last action of the first half was a Leeds effort as  Ayling’s left footed shot from the centre of the box was blocked.

So it was a first half where Brighton started well, but after a while Leeds got on top, but couldn’t find the cutting edge yet, could Leeds turn it round 2nd half?

A minute later, Veltman’s left footed shot from centre of the box was too high.

Five minutes later, Welbeck’s left footed shot from the left side of the box was saved in the bottom  left corner.

After 56 minutes, Ayling’s left footed shot from outside the box was blocked.

Just after the hour mark, White’s header for Brighton from centre of the box was just a bit too high following a set-piece.

After 66 minutes, Veltman’s right footed shot from centre of the box was blocked. Then a minute later, Maupay’s right footed shot from centre of the box was blocked.

With just over fifteen minutes remaining, Rodrigo’s left footed shot from centre of the box was blocked.

3 minutes later, Rodrigo’s left footed shot from the centre of the box missed to the right.  Then Dallas’ right footed shot from outside the box was too high.

With ten minutes remaining, Bissouma’s right footed shot from outside the box missed to the right.

2nd Brighton goal

Then in the same minute, Brighton scored their 2nd goal and It was a lovely goal as Welbeck controlled it with a Cruyff turn and finished nicely with his left footed shot from left side of the box into the bottom right corner.

After 83 minutes, Klich’s right footed shot from outside the box missed to the right.

The last chance was with  a minute of normal time remaining, and it was Webster’s header for Brighton from the centre of the box but it was just too high.

Fulltime score:  Brighton 2-0 Leeds

So it was an off day for Leeds but Brighton didn’t play too bad and had a goal in each half.

The result moved Brighton onto 37 points in 14th place and left Leeds in 9th place on 47 points, but after other results on Saturday and Sunday they ended the weekend in 11th place with 4 games left to play

Next up for Leeds is their penultimate home game of the season against Tottenham who are still hoping for top 4, so could be another tricky game for Leeds.
