There was a race that the Jade Emperor decided would measure time. He told the animals there should be a race across the river, and the winner would be the animal the Chinese New Year would be named after, then every other animal would have their year named after where they finished.
All the animals lined up at the side of the river, the rat and cat were good friends but worried as they weren’t great swimmers, they were clever and asked the Ox if he could carry them across. The Ox said of course climb on my back and I’ll help you across.
The rat and cat jumped up and were excited when the ox took the lead, they nearly reached the other side when the rat pushed the cat into the river leaving him to struggle. Just as the ox was about to win, the rat leapt on his head and onto the bank first. The emperor said well done, the first year of the zodiac will be named after you. The poor ox had been tricked into 2nd and the 2nd year would be named after him.
Then, the exhausted tiger clawed his way onto the bank to come 3rd, it was an enormous struggle so the emperor named the 3rd year after him.
The rabbit was cheeky as he didn’t swim, he hopped on stepping stones and found a log floating which carried him to shore, the 4th year named after him.
The dragon swooped down to take 5th, he made rain because some people need to drink water, then he saw rabbit on a log so blew a puff of wind, and the 5th year was named after him.
Next, the emperor heard the sound of horses’ hooves so thought the horse would be next, but the snake wriggled out from one of them, and the horse was so surprised he stepped back, which allowed the snake to take 6th, the horse settled for 7th.
A raft helped monkey, goat and rooster across. They told the emperor that they’d shared the raft that the rooster found, the goat and monkey cleared weeds and pushed it to shore, the emperor was pleased they’d worked together. The goat would be the eight zodiac animal the horse 9th and the rooster 10th.
Next to finish was the dog, the emperor asked Why are you so late when youre one of the best swimmers? The dog explained that the water was so clean, he had to take a bath on the way. He was named the 11th zodiac animal.
There was one final place and the emperor wondered where the last animal was. He heard a grunt from the boar, who explained he was hungry and had to stop on the way for something to eat, he was tired and fell asleep. The emperor said he’d still done well and named him the 12th and final zodiac animal.
Finally, the cat who had been pushed crawled his way out of the water, but was too late to have a year named after him, he felt very angry with the rat and since then cats have ever been friends with rats. From that day to the present, Chinese Zodiac has followed this cycle of years named after the animals.
